Information

This building was built by Don Vasco de Quiroga in 1540 to serve as a seminary and school for the indigenous people of the region. It is located on the corner of Alcantarillas y Árciga, one block from the Plaza Don Vasco.

Currently, the Folk Art Museum of Patzcuaro houses a large collection of lacquers, wooden dishes or trays with special designs decorated in vibrant colors such as maque and peribanas, shawls, pottery, woodwork, figure making, copper, engraving, etc. all made by local craftsmen.

The exhibition is worth seeing: the floor of flat cattle bones and stones, the garden full of flowers, topped with a real Michoacan troje, a typical wooden hut from the Purepecha area, and its colonial corridors transport us back to the time when it was the headquarters of the College of San Nicolás.

Open Tuesday to Sunday.
