La Historia de Culiacán (The History of Culiacan)

In this area there was a settlement known as Huey Culhuacan (Nahuatl word meaning "Place of those who worship the god Caltzin") founded around  628 AD and it is said that was erected by the very Aztecs when they were looking where to established but in fact, this region did not reach a cultural and economic development comparable to other pre-Hispanic cultures.

It is known that the arrival of the conqueror in the sixteenth century were discovered villages perfectly organized inhabited by Tahues. When Nuño de Beltran step on these lands in 1531, he divided it into three zone which it delimit Culiacan by the river Elota and the Mocorito under the jurisdiction of the New Galicia.

In 1786 the organization changed. The Intendancy replaced the province although Culiacan remained in the same jurisdiction. In 1831 the now states of Sonora and Sinaloa joined and formed the State of the West which at the same time had other departments and municipalities including that of Culiacan. Over the years it continued to change and it was not until 1915 that became officially in  Municipality  belonging to the state of Sinaloa.
