Information

The Santuario de Jesús Nazareno- Atotonilco was founded by the priest Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro as a place of retreat in the year 1748. The location was perfect, because of the semi-desert landscape and the relative distance from other towns that gave it the ideal atmosphere of peace. It has six chapels, of which stands out the "Del Calvario" because, besides being the largest, its walls are covered with paintings that describe the life of Jesus and the teachings of the Catholic religion. These works were the creation of  Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre, who worked for 30 years to give them their magnificence.
Historically, also relevant is that in 1810 Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla took the banner of the sacristy of the Virgin of Guadalupe to serve as the flag of his army.
