Information

The Plaza Santo Domingo is characterized by two buildings of exceptional beauty. One is the Old Palace of the Inquisition that today is home to the well-known Museum of Medicine, exhibiting a permanent collection all about Mexican medicine. And the other is the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, which during the colonial era was in close relation to the Tribunal of the Inquisition. This extraordinary 18th century convent was partly demolished in 1861, leaving only a small part of the original structure. Its silhouette is characterized by a unique tower that reaches up from the front entryway, a fine example of modest Baroque. On the other side of the square, one can admire a sculpture of Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, a promoter of the independence of Mexico. The former Customs building, and the house of Master Diego Pedraza can also be found on the edges of the plaza.
