We could say that the Cerro de la Bufa (Hill of la Bufa) originated the birth of Zacatecas: important deposits of silver were found on its base, reason why on September the 8th of 1546 the city was founded by Juan de Tolosa, Diego de Ibarra, Cristóbal Oñate and Baltazar Temiño de Bañuelos. By 1585 the king Felipe II would grant the title of “City of Our Lady of Zacatecas” and three years later, he ennobled it by conceding a coat of arms. Well then, what once was the land of native groups between zacatecos, caxcanes, huachichiles, tecuexes, irritilas and tepehuanes, would become one of the most brilliant urbanizations of New Spain.

Zacatecas Cathedral
The Zacatecas Cathedral is one of the most beautiful temples that you can find in Mexico. This extraordinary building is integral part of the urban landscape in this imposing city built in pink quarry stone. The construction of this masterpiece of the baroque architecture of the New Spain was begun in 1731 and partly finalized in 1752, when the solemn ceremony of dedication from the Cathedral to the Assuntion of Mary was carried out. The brimming decoration of its facade contains in the center a representation of the holy Trinity, that is initiated from the window of the chorus with the Holy Spirit, continuing with Christ Son and finally with the Eternal Father in the crowning. This composition is flanked by the twelve apostles.
