Information

Opposite the pier of the Port of Veracruz, you’ll find the Fortaleza de San Juan Ulúa, an imposing fortress built on the islet of the same name, with coral stones. This stronghold was built in the mid-16th century to protect the anchorage of ships due to bad weather, and to stop attacks by pirates and buccaneers. But over the years, its walls have witnessed many historic events filled with glory, shadows and mystery that gave rise to countless legends.
Its various uses have been: a dock, military barracks, a ,high-security prison until 1915, and also upon the decree issued by President Venustiano Carranza it became the Presidential Residence.
Since November 1984, it is now a museum, with exception to one of the areas of defense which is occupied by the Mexican Navy. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 5:00.
Each night, from the northern part of the Boardwalk in Veracruz, the fort fills with color thanks to a lighting system that highlights its majesty.
