Chiapa de Corzo is the heir to pre-Hispanic Chiapas, therefore it was known in antiquity as Chiapas de los Indios. It is home to one of the most colorful festivals of Mexico, that of San Sebastian, held every  January. The town has one of the best examples of Moorish art in the country.

On the banks of the Grijalva River and the entrance to Sumidero Canyon, Chiapa de Corzo is a historic city linked to the pre-Hispanic culture of Chiapas, the epic of the conquest, and the time of the independence. The Renaissance layout that overtook this former indigenous city, is distinguished by, the Mudejar monument called La Pila, the refined Moorish-inspired fountain made in brick, unique in Latin America, and the Santo Domingo Church and annexed convent building, which now houses the Museum of Laca.

There are many other attractions this historic city such as the ruins of the San Sebastian Church, the chapels of the neighborhoods, the pre-Hispanic ruins on the outskirts, and the Museum of Marimba.
