The city of Taxco de Alarcón, better known as Taxco, is located at 1752 meters above sea level, north of Chilpancingo, the capital of the state of Guerrero. The word comes from the Nahuatl vocabulary "Tlachco" meaning ‚"ball game‚" and was conquered by the Spaniards in 1552 who exploited its mineral wealth, it was also the birthplace of the playwright Juan Ruiz de Alarcon who, in his honor the city took its current name. Taxco is considered the Silver‚‘s Mexican Capital as its mines have existed since the colonial era.
The work of exploitation of the mines date back to 1800 but today is no longer a lot of silver because the melting of the mine and obviously by holding so much of it. Taxco is a gem with a touch of magic, with its narrow, cobbled streets and its white houses with red tile roofs, its historical monuments and museums that are regarded as the patrimony of the nation. Taxco is also known for its handicrafts made of silver, as well as their typical dishes prepared with an unusual ingredient, the Jumil. It also has various festivities of both religious and cultural and artistic. It has various tourist attractions as The Church of Santa Prisca, built in the eighteenth century, the Former Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, The William Spratling Museum which has pre-Hispanic pieces and objects created by himself, the Christ, in where you can see a magnificent panoramic view of the city, The Museum of Viceregal Art that was constructed in the second half of the eighteenth century, among others.
