Casa de La Sirena (Mermaid House) Av. Insurgentes. a un costado del Hotel Sta Clara
It was built in 1529 by order of Captain Diego de Mazariegos in its campaign of conquest and then handed over to Andres de Tovilla, who was accompanying the conqueror. The door with heraldry is flanked by capricious crowned columns with graceful lions and the upper window is positioned between two two-headed eagles. Another window is adorned by mortar figures like a mermaid or snake-women. The name of the house comes from a rough stone mermaid that is in the corner infront of the plaza.

Catedral de San Cristobal de las Casas (Cathedral) Plaza Mayor, Zona Centro
Built from 1528 and remodeled in the early eighteenth century, the Cathedral of San Cristobal de Las Casas dedicated to the Assumption, is the monument more representative of the city. His first parish priest was Fray Bartolome de las Casas. The interior retains interesting pieces of art, including two beautiful wood altarpieces in solomonic baroque style covered with gold leaf and the paintings of artist Juan Correa. His style denotes an austere Baroque touch with Mudejar details. Many treasures saved the cathedral, which is worth a meticulous visit.

Iglesia de La Merced (Church) Diego de Mazariegos Esq. Matamoros
La Merced was the first convent and church founded upon the initiative of four Mercedarian friars from Guatemala in 1537. The simplicity of the architecture is due to the little influence he had such an order in the civil and religious life of the province. The interior of the sacristy retains the original construction of a Roman arch guarded by two lions symbolizing the dominance of Spanish and decorated with floral motifs and mortar reliefs representing the sun and moon. The former Mercedarian convent was later municipal jail, thus the fortifed tower was added that characterizes it and now houses the Museum of Amber of Chiapas.
