The city of Puebla is one of the most notable historic jewels of Mexico: banner of patriotism thanks to those who fought against the french invaders in the famous battle of 1862. Nevertheless the fluctuation of such a rich past goes back to a remote epoch, even before the times of Cholula’s splendor in the proximities of the actual city of Puebla.

At the arrival of the Spanish conquerors, Cholula not only stood out as a business center, but as the worship headquarters of mythical Quetzalcoatl, an inspiration for leyends where man and god are joined together into one and into the same perspective of fantasy. The pyramid of Cholula is, believe it or not, the biggest of the world. With its 450 metres on each side, this enormous entity of rock edified by superimposed pyramids, dedicated to Chiconahui Quiáhuitl - god of rain, shows itself with magnificence as the triumph of a lost faith, and simultaneously, as an architectural achievemnet of great proportions. A journey through its ruins and alleys will allow one to observe the murals, where multiple narrations are represented or where one may find the display of symbolic motifs serving as the one and only testimony of those who once gave birth to such a ceremonial center.

Puebla, being a city with such magnetism, would not take long in becoming through the passing of Centuries into one of the most crowded urban centers, having as a foundation a rich architectural heritage, fed by a profound succession of traditions and cultural manifestations of wonderful forms and colors.

Before the zocalo we may perceive the majestic towers of the cathedral, both with 73.93 metres of height and considered to be the highest in the country. Francisco Becerra and Juan de Cigorondo were to design in 1575 the construction of this temple, but it would acquire its actual shape after a readaptation design set about in 1640 right after the arrival of Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza. A visit for tourists who admire its colossal vaults and brilliant decorations, lasts approximately 30 minutes. But the cathedral is only the beginning of such an extraordinary journey!
