Colloquially called La Bella Airosa or The Windy Beauty, Pachuca de Soto is the capital of the state of Hidalgo. At the beginning of the colonial period, the Spanish discovered in its territory important silver deposits and started mining in the region. To date, these mines have provided over 60% of the total gold production of the state and 50 % of the silver production. Architectural evidence of this activity can be seen among the old buildings of the miners in which 500 are listed as Historic Monuments.
