Information

Tlacolula de Matamoros is a village situated in the Central Valleys Region and can be reached by taking the road to Mitla, just 38 km (24 mi)  from Oaxaca City, or approximately 40 minutes.

It is likely that the word Tlacolula comes from the Nahuatl world Tlacolullan meaning "between the thick brush or in the thicket".

Tlacolula de Matamoros is distinguished for its artisany, regional food,  and its  Tianguis  or street market, an ancient tradition in Mexico, that comes alive every Sunday in this community.

The Tlacolula Market is one of the most extensive and colorful in all of Oaxaca. Every eight days the main street and adjacent streets, near the established market, are all abuzz with offers, smells, tastes, colors, textures and the cries of chickens about to be slaughtered.

Make sure to go on an empty stomach to sample the tlayudas, hot chocolate, enfrijoladas, or even the barbecued goat for lunch. Or try the delicious charcoal grilled chorizo, marinated jerky, and ribs.  And for dessert don’t forget to pass by for delicious traditionally baked bread with just the right touch of sweetness. You won’t regret it.
