Information

Handmade looms are mechanisms of great antiquity that have survived in their form and use with the passing of time.
The horizontal or vertical format of the loom is based in planks that weave the fabric using wool from camelids such as llama, alpaca or vicuna and also sheep.
The machine consists of a cluster of wires almost always arranged vertically called the "warp". The horizontal wires are called the “weft." The basic purpose of any loom is to hold the warp threads under tension to facilitate the interweaving of the weft threads. In the end, what is achieved by this weaving precess, is what we call the “material”.
In Oaxaca there is a strong textile tradition that goes back to pre-Hispanic times (loom waist) and which was diversified and enriched by the arrival of the Spaniards with the pedal and shuttle looms. There are a wide variety of textile crafts from villages near the city of Oaxaca, and other regions of the state, all unmistakable for their designs and colors of great originality that identify each region. Teotitlán del Valle, Mitla and Tlacolula, produce blankets, ponchos, carpets and rugs, which are made from a pedal looms, with wool thread, made and dyed naturally.
