Tribute to the mayors of Monterrey and the governors of the state.

Before the tremendous growth of the city and the need for new headquarters for the Monterrey municipal powers, the City Council (1974-1976) reviewed proposals for a new municipal building.

On May 13, 1974, construction began on the new City Hall at Plaza Zaragoza with the project being led by architects Jorge Albuerne, Nicholas Hadjopulos, Juan Villarreal, and Cesar Javier Flores. Among its architectural and engineering highlights is its main structure, which is made of steel, supported by eight columns around the perimeter and four central ones 30 meters apart from each other. The main dome, among other aspects of its construction, was very advanced for its time and is what has made this property a contribution to modern Mexican architecture. The use of spaces and the open floor plan on the ground floor allows you to enjoy your surroundings from every corner, which achieves greater integration of the building with the Plaza Zaragoza, museums, and historic sites that surround it.

The new city hall was inaugurated on July 9, 1976 and has since served as the seat of municipal powers. Previously, these government offices were located in what is now known as the Metropolitan Museum of Monterey or Old City Hall, located across from the square on the street, Calle Zaragoza.

In the central courtyard is the mural created by Julio Carrasco Breton, Monterrey 2000 that you must visit. It was completed on October 14, 1999 and represents a dramatization of the story of the state of Nuevo Leon and its capital, Monterrey from its founding to the present day. Its contents highlight characters and moments of great importance that consolidated the modern Monterrey which is known today. In this building there are various cultural, social, and recreational activities such as festivals and dances, which meet twice a week bringing together a large number of Monterrey visitors to enjoy a nice evening and the folklore of the city.

On the south side of the building is the work of renowned artist Rufino Tamayo, Tribute to the Sun. Made of a fine work of painted steel and welded using an assembly technique, it is about 25 meters in height and was donated by the CAINTRA. It was inaugurated on January 31, 1980.
