The Teatro Jose Peon Contreras was built in the late 19th century when the city was transformed with a social fashionable glamour, and for that reason its architecture has the elegant and classic style of European theaters. The construction is particularly beautiful, and most noteworthy is the white marble staircase which leads everyone into the main hall where the shows are held featuring the great artists from Merida and from around the world.
