Mazatlan

Mazatlán is, as they say in the indigenous language, "lugar donde abundan los venados" (the place where deer are plentiful), given the significance of the Náhuatl vocabulary that makes up its name: "Mazatl", deer, and "Tlán", abundance. The majority of historians agree that the indigenous Totorames were the principle inhabitants of the region when the Spanish arrived, occupying from the shores of the Río Piaxtla up to the Río de las Cañas. The Xiximes also figured into the creation of Mazatlán, they lived in the mountain range that is bordering the state of Durango.
Twenty-five Castilian messengers who were sent by don Nuño de Guzmán, after they had founded the city of Culiacán founded the city on May 14, 1531. Today this tourist destination, a place with an acclimate temperature located 21 kilometers from the Tropic of Cancer, is adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and through the years has developed from new colonies and the break up of old ones, and has complex tourist interests that underline its solid infrastructure.
It‘s the "Pearl of the Pacific", whose coastal zone displays fabulous beaches that are up to 17 kilometers long, making it one of the most extensive beach zones in the world. The people? They are warm, kind, and hospitable, such that every visitor will be satisfied. The municipal of Mazatlán has 80 kilometers of seaboard, a vast zone where we find the islands of La Piedra, Los Pájaros, del Venado, del Crestón and Los Chivos. While the ocean opens itself so that you can explore its incredible riches, the land offers an abundance of crocodiles, alligators, iguanas, snakes, turtles, the legendary jaguar which symbolizes the greatness of the ancient warriors, white-tailed deer, wild boars, etc.
The city of Mazatlán, has many public plazas where there is a lot of local history. The people pass around them, they meet and enjoy from an environment of vivacious trees, perpetuating the history of a marvelous city. But there is no doubt that the principle symbol of the city, if not the most important, is the Cerro del Crestón (Crestón Hill), whose summit holds the Faro de Mazatlán (Lighthouse of Mazatlán).
This construction is located on an ancient island 641 meters long and 321 wide, conformed by a series of cliffs and stoic bluffs. It‘s looks like a pyramid formed by nature. There are inclined slopes that open to profound caverns that house dangerous ocean current, rocky caverns that are accompanied by old legends of pirates during the 16th century that hid their treasures there. The lighthouse is an imposing figure at 157 meters tall: witness to the development of the port, is that in 1821 it received a certification from Cortes de Cádiz as the first port capable of docking large cargo ships on the Mexican Pacific. Therefore, the commercial climax wouldn‘t take long in becoming a fixture by attracting the attention of the consortium that anchored up to 60 cargo ships in the forthcoming years from Europe and the Oriental West. All types of merchandising goods circulated here in that epic and once the ships lifted their anchors, they sailed back toward their original ports carrying with them bars of gold and silver that were extracted from the region.
