Places to visit Basilica Our Lady of Guanajuato (interior) Guanajuato, Guanajuato
Plaza de la Paz, Zona Centro
The building of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato Collegiate began in 1671 and was completed 25 years later, sponsored by the miners in the area. It was elevated to the rank of Basilica in 1957.
The interior of this magnificent baroque building is characterized by its high altar of gold that protects a virgin who has become the patron and queen of the city: Our Lady of Guanajuato, anonymous Virgin of Andalusia and the oldest image to come to America. This wooden sculpture was donated by King Charles I and his son Philip II to the people of Guanajuato as a form of recognition of its mining prosperity on August 8, 1557. It represents the Virgin and Child with an embossed silver pedestal base. Around this sculpture are images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Ignatius of Loyola, co-patron of the parish and Foranía, and the Statue of Santa Fe of Guanajuato in reference to the title of Noble and Loyal City of Real de Minas de Santa Fe Guanajuato and it received a reproduction of Santa Fe de Granada, from where the Blessed Lady came.
Near the altar we can observe an instrumental gem: a tubular organ of 1098 tubes whose builder is unknown. This beautiful instrument was recently restored by the German organist Joachim Wesslowski.
