This government building is stunning, and by itself enhances the downtown. The Palacio Federal of Colima, found at the intersection of Francis I. Madero and General Nunez and in front of the beautiful Jardin Nunez, was designed by Guadalajaran architect Lopez de Lara and, ratified by his colleague Max Vazquez in the early 20th century. For much of the 18th century, the land was used as the cemetery of Colima, which finally closed due to the growth in the city. According to the book "The Colima of Yesterday," written by Francisco Hernández Espinosa, he relates that in the late 19th century this property was acquired by Blas Ruiz, with the purpose of building his own home, but at the same time establishing a commission house, called Building Ruiz. For various political frictions, the state government seized the property and established the Office of Asset Forfeiture Intervention, which served also to enforce the ban on exports of commodities, as well as the requirement to use paper money for 20 pesos. Between 1928 and 1931 business trials were held, which ultimately on February 6, 1934, deeded the mansion to the Federal Government. The building has two floors, and originally had a couple of vantage points which through various renovations were destroyed, as well as a beautiful wooden staircase that had been carved by the carpenter Peter Zamora. Its interior boasts a mural that is based on the Castle of Chapultepec, San Cristobal, the monument to Cuauhtemoc and Nezahualcoyotl. Since prior times, the building has been used for post offices and various agencies. Currently, there is staff dispatched for the SAT, the local INE and the Telegraph and Post Services. The building is a short tour,  and is open Monday to Friday until 8:00 pm.
