Beginning in1904 he was Head of Primary and Normal Education in Mexico, Professor of the Normal High School for Teachers, and Adviser of the Secretariat of Public Education (Mexico). Ouinetro authored more than 30 books on pedagogy, history, customs, stories, and other topics. He died in Mexico City on January 28, 1934. His remains lie in the Rotunda of Illustrious Men.
The town of Colima pays homage to him with a monument and plaza that were remodeled in 2008 with the purpose of embellishing the square, and creating more functionality for the activities that take place there. The Jardin Gregorio Torres Quintero is equipped with tables and umbrellas as well as a wireless internet connection and outlets for laptops.  On the weekends a colorful artisan market is held, with artistic and cultural events taking place between 5:00 and 6:30pm.
