Information

The Catedral Basílica Menor has been consecrated to the Virgin of Guadalupe since 2000, thanks to the late Pope John Paul II, and since then every December it has received thousands of worshipers who visit the church with devotion. It was built beginning in 1527, and between 1820 and 1894 the Cathedral suffered some alterations that are still reflected in its current state today. The simple facade has an access that is framed with Ionic arches.  Inside the temple, the neoclassical style decor is noteworthy, dominated by cedar wood carvings that were the creation of cabinetmakers  Manuel Cedeño and Andrés González.  The pulpit is the work of renowned carver Don Othon Bustos.  Another highlight is the old sculpture of San Felipe Jesus, patron of the city since 1668.
