Originally built in the commercial center, Plaza Loreto, Soumaya Museum has a new exhibition: The Museo Soumaya - Plaza Carso.

It was inaugurated on Tuesday March 1, 2011 by successful Mexican entrepreneur and founder of the museum, Carlos Slim, accompanied by Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez, Colombian novelist, journalist and Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1982, Larry King, American writer and journalist, and Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, President of Mexico.

Soumaya Museum houses one of the most important collections of American art as well as the second largest collection of Rodin sculpture outside French territory.  The 17,000 m2 building has an exhibition area of 7.517 m2 distributed over 6 unique levels in shape and form.
Exhibition Halls Soumaya Museum - Plaza Carso (each room corresponds to a floor), "Baroque, Renaissance and Neoclassicism, Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism Vanguardia" under one roof.

Room 1: "Colonial coins, republicans and the Second Mexican Empire." It is the most important collection of colonial currency in Mexico.

Room 2: "Portrait of the nineteenth century Mexican and European" - "Impressionist and early avant-garde." Artists like Jose Agustin Arrieta, Hermenegildo Bustos, Pelegrin Clave and furniture and costumes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Room 3: "Old European Masters and New Spain": Domenikos Theotokopoulos, El Greco, Cristobal de Villalpando, Miguel Cabrera, Juan Correa, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and follower of David Teniers the Younger, etc.

Room 4: "Mexican Landscape from the nineteenth century" - "Applied Arts". Mexico through its landscape, exhibits works by traveling painters.  It offers a tour of the independent Mexico, reconstructed from pieces such as shrines, devotional objects, portraits, fashion and applied arts. Works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Amedeo Modigliani, Maurice de Vlaminck and Pedro Villegas, among others.

Room 5: "Mesoamerican cultures of the West" - "Mexican Art of the Twentieth Century." Works by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Jose Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Dr. Atl, Georges Braque, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, Jean-Frédéric Maximilien de Waldeck and Monica Guzman Alvarez, as well as pieces of pottery, shell and stone of Mesoamerican art and stone from Colima, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Nayarit.

Room 6: In an area of 1.704 m2 we can appreciate the exhibition entitled "European Sculpture" and "The era of Rodin", the latter collects sculptures by the French Impressionist artist Auguste François René Rodin and the second largest collection of Rodin outside of France . Highlights include: "The Gates of Hell," "The Thinker" and "The Kiss" or "Eternal Spring" and "Eve" in marble.

You can also see works of Pietro Bazzanti and Camille Claudel, and the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí such as the Christ without the Cross, and the classic melting clocks, among others.

Installations of the Museo Soumaya Plaza Carso: Six floors of permanent and temporary exhibition, Center for the Studies of the History or Mexico CARSO, auditorium for 350 people, Telmex Digital Classroom, Library, Workshops, and spaces for reflection and creation, Shop, Restaurant and Cafeteria, Offices.

Activities of the Museo Soumaya Plaza Carso: Guided school tours, family and special groups, guided tours in English, conferences, courses and diplomas, workshops for the general public, scenic and cultural events, activities for reflection and interpretation, special accommodations for those people with disabilities and seniors.
