Information

Xpuhil is a Mayan name that comes from a herbaceous plant in the cyprus family that was found abundantly in the town, and known for its form as "Cat’s Tail". The earliest evidence of human dwelling on the site dates from 400 B. C., within the time period known as the Late Preclassic.  The height of the area, mainly reflected in its architecture, seems to have been during the Late Classic time period (AD 600-800 years), and its demise took place in the early Postclassic, in about the year 1200.

It is composed of approximately seventeen architectural groups, and several residential platforms, scattered throughout the length and breadth of its 5 km (3 mi) in size. The Xpuhil Archaeological Zone is located  302 kilometers (188 mi.) southeast of the city of Campeche, and you can get there on the federal Highway 186.

The site is open every day from 8:00 to 5:00. Admission fee: $50.00 pesos. Entrance is free on Sundays for nationals with I.D.
